The Chilmark Research team shares what we’ll be looking for at HIMSS23

What we’re researching and who we’re meeting

John

Real world data / evidence platforms – How is this data being normalized? Meeting with Surescripts, Health Catalyst, Cerner, Epic, Invitae and more to see how these various data aggregators are enabling population-level research, distributed clinical trials, and the next generation of evidence-based clinical pathways.

Quantifying the ROI of digital health investments – What information technology solutions have truly proven themselves as we near 15 years since HITECH went into effect?

New API use cases to solve ongoing interoperability issues – Fatma and I will be catching up on all things APIs this HIMSS. Looking forward to reconnecting with Paul Wilder from the CommonWell Health Alliance and celebrating their 10 year anniversary with them (HAPPY ANNIVERSARY COMMONWELL!). I’ll also be meeting with Orion Health, PointClickCare, Moxe Health, Zus Health, Rhapsody / Lyniate, and Kno2.

Cyber security and patient privacy protection – Chilmark has always focused on the areas where health IT can have the most significant impact on the care delivery experience. With the Meta pixel fiasco catalyzing new conversations about privacy protections and patient trust, and [almost] daily cyber attacks interrupting care somewhere in the country, we’re considering adding this space to our coverage in the near future – HIMSS23 will give us some perspective on what that may actually mean. To this end, I will be meeting with DirectTrust and Fortified Health Security this year.

What’s up with PHM? PHM was all the buzz in 2018, but since then the noise has subsided substantially. Given the acceleration of VBC programs since the lockdowns of 2020, wouldn’t it make sense that PHM come back into the forefront of conversations? I’ll be looking to get a proper pulse check on where exactly we stand with the adoption of these strategies and technologies today, meeting with Lightbeam Health Solutions, the big EHR vendors, Lumeon, and a couple others.

Jody

My primary focus this year will be looking at how different companies are (or are not) thinking about responsible AI in Healthcare. Where are the legitimately safe AI tools being deployed and what use cases can we depend on today, versus the ones that still need to be fine tuned to be less biased (racist / ableist) and more equitable. I will be paying particular attention to generative AI use cases, AI and automation, and approaches to governance and transparency. I’ll be meeting with Google, DataRobot,

Following up on our 2020 report on SDoH, I will also be looking at progress in approaches to addressing SDoH since CMS issued its 2021 guidance on screening patients for specific SDoH needs.

Elena

Retail in Healthcare – In 2023 we saw multiple blows to traditional care delivery channels. Best Buy and Amazon are working day and night along with a few other retail companies. Will that change our healthcare image forever? I think so. I’ll be talking as much as I can about big retail disruption in health and how it will play out, though we can see some meaty sprouts already.

RCM – RCM is a kernel of healthcare in the USA, needs much attention and I expect HIMSS’23 to provide some updates on the subject. I have been involved in talks on automated authorizations, opening APIs, simplified payer-provider communication, for too long, I will be looking for executed solutions with proven efficacy. Most importantly, provider-payer platforms. If traditional health-delivery pipes can’t make it more transparent and consumer-friendly, big retail will take over everything but ICU and surgical in the coming years.

RPM/H@H – Remote care delivery is another fat splash on my HIMSS’23 map- it got its momentum. Will Hospital-at-Home, RPM specialty programs be able to significantly expand their market in 2023? What are their merge/acquisition strategies? What are the main technologies driving this market? I have been testing a number of RPM devices in 2022/23, I can see a tremendous value for population health and overall responsibility shift. My RPM experience review will be published in the coming month.

Fatma

TEFCA Developments– I’m looking forward to meeting with a few of the six QHINs (so far, we are meeting with Commonwell Health Alliance and Kno2) and getting first-hand accounts of their experiences being a QHIN so far. In addition, I hope to gain insight into how it feels to be a QHIN and get their take on the journey to becoming a QHIN.

API Use Cases to Tackle Interoperability Issues– The healthcare IT market harbors a bunch of API solutions. I’m interested in learning more about them and seeing how their functionality contributes to the bigger picture of seamless interoperability.

What we’re listening for

John

  • Ethical AI frameworks for critical governance and transparency
  • Where’s the Zapier for healthcare?
  • General pulse of the industry – what’s happening that isn’t grabbing headlines yet? Where is the tech industry having a positive impact on the world of care delivery? What solutions have truly proven an ROI in the past 15 years?

Jody

  • How the discourse on trust, governance and AI is evolving in respect to ethics, validation, bias, replicability. Efforts beyond CHAI and how deep initiatives are going beyond the broad frameworks and principles.
  • Generative AI–what the buzz is and a reality check on it.
  • What’s new in the SDoH space and evolution since our report in 2019.  Interoperability. Is there any substance to the techquity discourse.
  • AI and Ops space and what’s happened in the last two years since our report and M&A/acquisitions.
  • Any new AI product introductions

Elena

  • Patient Exp. Forum: Closing Care Gaps with Patient Engagement
  • Behavioral Health and new approaches to therapy delivery
  • RCM payer-provider technologies
  • Consumerization of health and new care-delivery systems

Fatma

Attitudes towards Information Blocking Rule: It’s been a little over six months since the Information Blocking Rule went into effect. Initially, the attitudes towards this change were negative as organizations scrambled to fulfill the requirements. I’m curious to see if those attitudes have changed with time.

What we’re looking forward to

John

Seeing all my industry friends in-person again – ATA was just a tease being so much smaller than HIMSS.

Introducing people to my new vision for how Chilmark Research delivers value to the industry.

Jody

Catching up with friends in the industry. Excited to hear about how challenges are being met in AI space.

Elena

We are setting up a bunch of meetings, buying the most comfortable shoes and looking forward to the annual expedition to HIMSS. It does sound promising this year, doesn’t it?

There is a lot happening under the Digital Health carpet and I am hopeful to bring home some juicy insights, better understanding of where the market shifts under the pressure of upcoming recession, and most important- to see our friends, clients and vendors we are working with in person.

Fatma

I look forward to experiencing my first HIMSS Conference in full glory! I’m excited to hear about developments relating to interoperability and other areas of interest.

Sessions we recommend

Workforce / capacity issues and AI – and where the two meet – are still the two biggest topics on clinical executives’ minds right now at both ViVE 2024 and HAS24. Probably the first time I’ve seen the same primary focus two years in a row – historically we’ve always seen a new buzzword / hype topic every year…
